Dead Darlings #13
LOVE FOR SALE
Thirteenth Edition: 12—14 February 2021
W139: Warmoesstraat 139, 1012 JB Amsterdam
On February 14th, W139, talkshow Stampa and Dead Darlings came together, offering artists and our community at large, a chance to stand stronger together against the reality of defunding and the threat of shutting down this iconic and historical Amsterdam institution!
After the success of our previous online fundraiser, we felt more confident planning an online “Corona-times” event, so when we were approached in January by Stampa talkshow and W139 for another collaboration, we plunged right into it! Because of policy changes, and the ongoing corona crisis, many artist-run spaces were in danger of closure, and so was the case with our beloved W139, an experimental space we collaborated with, in our very early days and who helped us get our start. Just like the Rietveld-which is our alma mater, this cause, was equally close to our hearts.
We set up this online auction in support of a cause, but this time we also built a wonderful exhibition on the W139 location hiving us the chance to photograph and film the works in relation to each other and their own materiality, thus combining at least the exhibition aspect of our live auctions with the online format. We enthusiastically disseminated the open call, throughout our network, -this time an all-out donation by the artists-encouraging everyone to donate a work and help W139 stay and remain at the heart of the city supporting and enabling artists to work freely and independently.
Both artists and the wider community proved extremely generous and supportive, amassing over 48.000 euros in a single evening, which contributed considerably to the eventual preservation of the much-loved Amsterdam landmark.
