This time we did things a little differently! Instead of an open call, we invited art-lovers and collectors in our midst to suggest and nominate artists. Nominated by Young Collectors Circle, Oedipus, and Dead Darlings, artists intertwine and overlap in our adjacent show and auction exhibitions under the same title. We thus open two shows on May 31st: Young Collectors Circle will have 28 artists on display in their sales show while Dead Darlings is displaying 42 pieces that will be auctioned off on Sunday, June 4th concluding A Public Affair with a big bang.
As always at Dead Darlings, all the artists names will be listed, but not in connection with the work. The names of the makers will be revealed during the auction, only after the purchase of the lot!
For those of you unfamiliar with our events, here is a little background: The name Dead Darlings was inspired by the phrase “kill your darlings”. This refers to a work that an artist has created, yet for any variety of reasons, was not yet brought to light. Was it too experimental? Too personal? Too a-typical? Whatever it is that makes this piece a dead darling, means that its place in the artist’s oeuvre is ambiguous and valuation is difficult… That’s where we come in to breathe new life into those dead darlings! We ask artists to offer us such a work at a very low starting price in order to participate in our lively ongoing discussion about how art is valued, while creating an inclusive platform with affordable artworks.
Check out our fabulous diverse list of artists and the captivating array of works they chose to place under the DD hammer! We can’t wait to engage you with their stories, surprise you with their creators, and celebrate the redistribution of value in an auction that challenges convention and serves delicious food for thought that you can wash down with a profusion of Oedipus beer!

What is a Dead Darling? A Dead Darling, is a work that an artist might not normally sell; A fabulous experiment, an outlier, a misfit, yet always something that stands strong on its own and has a story to tell. We give these works a second chance for love and love to tell their story. As these pieces have been previously “killed”, starting prices for our auctions are very low, (ranging from less than one to a hundred euro) giving all of you the opportunity to bid for an original and often unique artwork. All the artworks are auctioned anonymously, so the buyer can connect to what they love! Participating artists are listed, but the names are not revealed in relation to the piece until after the sale.
Who are Dead Darlings? Dead Darlings are a collective founded in Amsterdam in 2005, running anonymous art auctions as a platform that challenges notions of value and explores the complex love triangle between artist, artwork, and collector. Our focus is on artefacts whose value is ambiguous. Our events combine elements of performance and exhibition. As a collective we bring something “unseen” into the public sphere. The core members are Tania Theodorou, Lina Ozerkina, Hanna Mattes and Jessie Yingying Gong. During events our team expands to include more Darlings.
