At our first auction which took place in 2005 in a rented space attached to a block of studios in Amsterdam west, we focused on the very idea of Dead Darlings and treated that definition as a theme in itself.

When we asked artists the all important question: “Why is this a Dead Darling?” We begun to realize that there were an abundance of reasons for artists to kill their Darlings and a wealth of stories behind those reasons, most of which were interesting and worth exploring. So that’s what we did.
